The major health problems facing our communities today are largely preventable, and attributable to a few types of behaviors, including those behaviors that lead to injuries (accidents and violence), drug and alcohol abuse including tobacco use, poor nutrition, and insufficient physical activity. These interrelated behaviors contribute to poor health, as well as poor educational and social outcomes. Because these are behaviors that begin in adolescence, it is important to address them early in a child’s education through supplemental programs.
More children are adopting unhealthy lifestyles and as they get older. Daily participation in all types of physical activities declines. Many of today’s social problems are a result of behavior and lifestyle choices that do not offer simple, well-defined solutions. That’s why greater emphasis is placed on the whole person, which equips students with the knowledge that they can be healthy and physically active for a lifetime. One way to help young people form a healthy habit of physical activity is to ensure that the activity connects with their interests outside of school. The Lewis Sports Foundation can help.
Academics and Sport
Educators and coaches notice that many young men and women have difficulty with their dual role as athletes and students, and often have little support for their young career goals. Also, an overwhelming majority of talented athletes spend an extra-ordinary amount of their time perfecting their sports skills while their time spent on other personal development issues are given less notice.
As an example, annually, close to 300,000 high school seniors participate in football programs across the country. Many football players have the dream of competing for the 320 rookie spots that open each year at the professional level. Obviously, the vast majority will not fulfill this "dream." The fortunate few can expect an average career that spans only four years. Many will go on to lead productive lives – many others will not.
Educators, coaches and parents agree that there is a lack of available resources for today’s youth to handle these unique life issues. The Lewis Sports Foundation believes the power of physical activity and sport can provide a solid foundation for youth to achieve success in all walks of life. Education can be a tool by which we enhance health, wellness, fitness and leadership potential.
